NEW YORK’S NAVY FLEET WEEK; A CELEBRATION OF SERVICE FOR MEMORIAL DAY
Spanning Memorial Day Weekend, Fleet Week New York is the City’s celebration of the sea services. Hosted nearly every year since 1984, the annual event also allows New Yorkers and visitors to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen. The Fleet Week event schedule also includes dozens of military demonstrations and displays throughout the city. As a rare opportunity, there will be public visitation of many of the participating ships:
- Fleet Week Ships in Manhattan – ships are open every day from 8 am to 5 pm at Piers 90 & 92
- Fleet Week Ships in Staten Island – ships are open every day from 8 am to 5 pm at the Homeport Pier
- Fleet Week Ships in Brooklyn – Ships are open Sat, Sun & Mon, May 26-28 from 8 am to 5 pm for the coalition ships
THE 6TH OPERATION SAIL FOR 2012
In addition to the USmilitary servicemen and ships, New Yorkwill also host the parade of tall ships from around the world in the 2012 version of Operation Sail. The tall ships represent nine nations and will be open for general public visiting at no cost. Many other privately owned ships come to theNew YorkHarbor for the event.
Referred to as “OpSail“, the original concept of Operation Sail is greatly credited to the late Frank Braynard who was also a driving force behind another well known New York City attraction; the South Street Seaport. There have only been five previous Operation Sails, including the debut sail in the summer 0f 1964; each OpSail landmarks an American historical event. This year’s Operation Sale 2012 will celebrate the bicentennial of the War of 1812 and the birth of our national anthem, The Star Spangled Banner.
